It seems these days that the automobile manufacturers are concerned about their image.Apparently we aren’t entirely convinced they have our best interests at heart. How could that be?Are these not the kind folks who have given us so many advances in car technology over the years?
One of the great innovations was the introduction of the timing belt. Before this we were cursed with timing chains. What was the problem with them? They could pretty much be depended upon to last the life of the vehicle!Where is the opportunity for profit given such reliability?A rubber belt,on the other hand, has to be replaced every 60,000 miles or it will break.
Of course a broken belt alone is not that serious, only a few hundred dollars to fix. That gave rise to the interference engine.A huge step forward in that it will suffer catastrophic damage when the belt lets go.The owner is now faced with either spending possibly as much as the vehicle is worth or buying a new one.A win-win scenario for the dealership and the manufacturer.
Thankfully they have not tinkered with other previously dependable components, such as gas pedals and brakes.Oops!
Gee guys it is hard to imagine why you are so paranoid. How could consumers not love you?
